Workshops for scienstists

For small groups of researchers, I provide 2 -3 hour workshops (English or Dutch). The workshops help scientists communicate their research more effectively and increase their visibility. You can find a description of the workshops below. The program is flexible and can be adjusted to your preferences. I’d be happy to get in touch to tell you more!

Do you want to reach a larger audience with your research, but do you have no idea where to start? This workshop provides you with hands-on tools. You will learn how to interest a layman’s audience for your findings and how to communicate more effectively on social media.

The following topics are addressed:

  • You learn the basic principles of storytelling and apply it to your research

  • How to recognize storylines in your own research that are relevant for outsiders (journalists, policymakers, opinionators, funders)

  • What platforms (Instagram, LinkedIn, And Twitter/X) to use for which purpose

  • When to post about what and how to create a nice hook

  • How to write a good post and what an interesting post should contain

The workshop will allow you to look at your own research from a distance. This way you can trigger a non-academic audience through the of use social media. These skills can also help you with proposal writing and improve the readability of your papers.

Social media

Science & the press

Do want to get coverage by the press? Or would you like to publish an opinion article in a newspaper? As a scientist, you are often involved in specific niche research. That allows you to come up with valuable insights. At the same time, people lacking background knowledge might not always follow you. That doesn't mean journalists are not interested in your work, they just can't always comprehend. In other words: you need to learn their language first.

The following topics are addressed:

  •  How to recognize storylines in your own research that are interesting for journalists

  •   How media think and work. What makes research ‘newsworthy’?

  • What are news hooks and how can you link your findings to current (news)events?

  • How to find journalists that cover your field

  • How to voice your opinion, for example in an opinion article in a newspaper

  • Optional: practice an interview with a real journalist

During the workshop, I will share many examples of media exposure and what the impact can be. Also, based on my experiences I will share do’s and don’ts when reaching out to media and interacting with journalists. The workshop can be extended with a short media training, where participants get to practice their interview skills.

The practical tips and the combination between listening and hands-on assignments were nice. Also, I liked Karst’s enthusiasm.
